A Heartbreaking Loss

Landyn smiles at camera with a dandelion behind his ear.

We are deeply saddened by the devastating loss of Landyn, a 16-year-old boy with a form of epilepsy called Dravet Syndrome, who tragically passed away on May 14, 2024, while at school in Trenton, Ontario. Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and everyone affected by this heartbreaking incident.

Landyn’s story underscores the urgent need for comprehensive training and education for school staff, ensuring they are well-equipped to support students living with epilepsy and other neurological conditions. This tragedy also highlights the critical importance of implementing individualized Plans of Care for each student with seizures and epilepsy within their school environment.

At Epilepsy Toronto, we are committed to advocating for better education and training for school staff and the development and implementation of individualized Plans of Care for students living with epilepsy. We will continue to work to raise awareness and promote the importance of proper support for people living with epilepsy in all areas of their lives, including their education.

In honour of Landyn, let us renew our efforts to ensure that no other family has to endure such a profound loss. If you would like to support Landyn’s family after this tragedy, a fundraiser has been started to help his family with funeral costs and other related expenses.

If you are an Epilepsy Toronto member who has been affected by this, please reach out to us. We recognize the emotional impact this devastating event has had on many of our clients and their families. We follow the story with interest as it continues to be investigated and will keep you up to date.
