We are pleased to announce that Ann Blanchette will be representing Epilepsy Toronto on the Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) for the Toronto District School Board (TDSB). Ann brings great passion and dedication to this role, and we look forward to the advocacy and support she will provide for families in our community.
“It is my privilege to serve as your Epilepsy Toronto voice on the Special Education Advisory Committee with the Toronto District School Board. Our family’s journey began with my child’s diagnosis of Mesial Temporal Lobe Epilepsy and challenges with poor response to medication, along with the discovery of a learning disability and ADHD. These concurrent diagnoses led us to the Epilepsy Classroom at the Hospital for Sick Children in grades 3 and 7. We were later awarded a Seizure Response Dog Guide, which has been an incredible support for my child’s safety and independence.
“Along the way, I have worked closely with schools to collaborate and advocate for my child’s IEP, ensuring accommodations that reflect not only epilepsy awareness and safety, but also co-occurring learning disabilities, ADHD, and Autism. I have also worked with Trustees to address instances of ableism within the school system and to help update school policies. A key part of my advocacy has been raising epilepsy awareness in schools, helping staff and students build a deeper understanding and create safer, more inclusive environments. My child is currently in their final year of high school and exploring options for post-secondary education. These experiences continue to shape my commitment to supporting families and fostering greater understanding within the education system.”
We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Steve Lynette, who has faithfully represented Epilepsy Toronto at SEAC and advocated for the needs of children with epilepsy for more than 15 years.
